Indian Wedding Dress Code: What to Wear to Every Function

Wedding Guide · 17 October 2026

An Indian wedding often runs for several days, and each function has its own mood. Here is what people usually wear to each one, so you can plan your outfits ahead.

Mehndi

Mehndi is relaxed and colourful. Greens, yellows and bright pastels are popular, in light fabrics that are comfortable to sit in while the henna goes on. Sharara sets, short kurtas with palazzos and simple lehengas all work.

Haldi

Yellow is traditional, and other bright, light shades work too, because turmeric stains. Choose washable, breathable cotton or light silk and skip heavy embroidery.

Sangeet

This is the evening for dancing, so pick something that photographs well and moves easily: a lehenga, a gown or an indo-western set. Our sangeet outfit ideas go into more detail.

The wedding ceremony

This is the most traditional event. Brides often wear red, maroon, pink or gold, though ivory, sage and blush are popular now too. Guests usually wear rich silks and jewel tones, and some ceremonies avoid white and black. If you're not sure, ask the family.

The reception

The reception tends to be more modern and formal. Gowns, saree gowns, embellished lehengas and tailored sherwanis or bandhgalas are all common choices.

Planning your outfits

Write down every function and the colour you plan to wear to each, so you don't repeat yourself. Check the dress code with the family, since customs differ between communities. Order anything with handwork early, because embroidery takes time. And think about travel, as some fabrics crease more than others.
